(maybe reaching that milestone wasn't a bad time to have taken a break). but i will conclude this long overdue comeback post by writing about my most recent gig, which was two weeks ago and for the rotary club of havant. it was a 'fifth monday' rotary event (members and partners), and my topic for the after dinner speech at the super hayling golf club was 'my life as a freelance comedy writer'. most organisations that book this talk get a version that is around 50 - 55 minutes plus questions but the requirement for this dinner was 40 minutes plus q&a. this meant that i had to edit the usual content to fit the slot and allow time for the inclusion of any tailored material, such as topical humour. all of the content in this talk has been honed over many years and works very well but i chose to pick the stories which i felt would be the most appropriate for a mixed rotary audience and cut some lines out of those, even if it sometimes meant losing a guaranteed laugh. the result was a talk that was extremely well received and left time for a few questions. i managed to work in a topical gag about appalling reality tv which got a decent laugh and, at the end of the speech, was able sincerely mention the lovely setting, the lovely meal and the lovely audience. when i started this blog exactly ten years ago, its mission statement was 'acknowledge, advise then advertise'. i would like to acknowledge the lift in and out from the station and the vote of thanks from mike and the evening of fascinating legal discussion with my speaker host chris. and now here's the advice: public speaking tip #508: don't panic if you have to edit a presentation that really works to fit a shorter time slot than usual. cherry-pick the material you judge to be most fitting to the audience but still leave some room for extra content tailored especially to the news, the location, the organisation or (if you've had confirmation that it's acceptable and non-contentious) some of the personalities present. it's better to lose the odd laugh or fascinating fact than to lose the attention of the audience or the patience of the organiser because you have overrun. date: monday 31 july 2017 organisation: the rotary club of havant venue: hayling golf club audience: around 40, mixed, mature. content: after dinner speech, 'my life as a freelance comedy writer' duration: 40 minutes microphone? yes, hand-held additional q&a? yes recorded? yes thank you for reading; it's nice to be back. nick r thomas | post a comment | share article tagged rotary club humour , after dinner speaking , tailoring speeches , timing a speech , topical humour wednesday aug 21 2013 late october: literary events, lozenges and linctus! wednesday, august 21 review: southbourne literary society meeting, bournemouth, october 2012 on 17 october i was asked to go along to a meeting of southbourne literary society in bournemouth. this was something i had decided to do anyway as i had seen how they had lost their stalwarts mr hall and mr hilliam and i wanted to see if i could help them by becoming more involved (more about this in future posts). as always, there were two speakers on the bill (something which i believe makes this society unique in the bournemouth area and perhaps much further afield). the first talk was in the form of an interview (loosely based on a well-known radio show!)where president john bonsor asked eileen rawlings about her favourite books. these ranged from children's literature through classics to contemporary literature and each extract was expertly- delivered, whether moving or amusing. between readings, eileen told of her life in bournemouth, including her teaching career and early involvement with the brownsea open air theatre . although her teaching experience is probably mostly responsible for her excellent delivery, i suspect that the stage time from her am-dram years and even her dance training all contributed. public speaking tip #501: any performing experience can be useful when it comes to public speaking. eileen's late husband keith was an honorary alderman of bournemouth, having served on the council for 19 years, and wrote just bournemou
